THE FLAT-COATED RETRIEVER
CHAMPION WIMPOLE PETER.
THE accompanying illustration which is reproduced from a portrait by Miss Maud Earl, represents one of the most celebrated members of a most fashionable variety of sporting dog, and is therefore likely to be of interest to our readers, irrespective of its artistic merits.
The great Champion Wimpole Peter, was whelped in May 1897, his sire being Black Drake, and his dam Racket by Heedtul, the honour of breeding him being due to Mr. F. Keen, though his present owner Mr. H. R. Cooke, of Riverside, Nantwich, has exhibited him during his most successful career. Although appearing only at the leading shows, Wimpole Peter has already won eleven champion- ships, namely, two at Darling- ton, three at Birmingham, one at Leicester, two at Manchester, and three at the Crystal Palace, in addition to which he possesses the unique distine- tion of winning the Kennel Club Challenge Cup, for the best flat-coated Retriever at their show, upon three con- secutive occasions. Champion Peter has also been awardel
the Birmingham Challenge Bowl, for the best Retriever of any breed at that great exhibi- tion, besides first and special prizes innumerable. He is, more- over, as good a dog in the field as he has proved himself to be upon the show bench, and consequently it is not surprising to learn that a record price offered by an American sports- man for him has recently been declined. It may be added that his owner, Mr. Cooke, has won the Kennel Club Challenge Cup for flat-coated Retrievers every year since 1897, namely, in that year with Gipsy of Swynnerton, in 1898 with Champion Worsley Bess, and in 1899, 1900 and I got with the subject of our illustration, all the above being first-rate dogs in the field, as their owner keeps his Retrievers for work quite as much as for show.
